They were pretty much bursts shots. With the shutter open for half a minute I just keep shooting and shooting. I took 10 pics before the storm blew over, so I captured a good 5 minutes of what was going on in my view. I thought it woudl all have to be dumb luck, but as long as you have the camera pointed in the area of the bolts, chances are you'll catch some strikes.
As for getting into photography, I would say the best thing for you to do is buy a cheaper point and shoot digital camera. They will do everything you need them to do, and they save you from having to learn the functions of an SLR, but the trade off is that you lose the level of control SLRs provide. I know a few guys in a few forums that do alot of photography with cameras like a Powershot G6 or any Nikon Coolpix and they pull off great shots. If you do decide to get an SLR or dSLR I would suggest you start reading up now on how they work, or even take a course being offered around the area. If you take a course, you'll learn all you need to know and tons more, and you'll have access to a dark room in which they'll teach you how to use.
