Default big WTF for my new comp...might have ya scratching your head - 11-06-2005, 05:10 PM

wallbash:

my neighbors dropped off my new computer yesterday, i tried installing the drivers for my gfx card, an nvidia 7800 gfx, made by bfg tech...while installing it said something about windows not being able to verify that the card was made compatible for windows, and it was recommended i stopped. i didnt, and the computer started fucking up. basically, it would show the options of loading windows normally (which wouldnt work, the pc would reboot and then go back to this screen), run the last working config, or safe mode options...

i had a campus tech services guy come today, we were there for 5 hours trying to figure out wtf the problem is...he called his supervisor, who suggested that the drivers we were trying to install were corrupt, uninstalling them didnt seem to work, and after calling BFG tech support, all they could recommend was to dl drivesweep (which would clear up all nvidia drivers) and to install the newest drivers from nvidia off the interweb. the drivesweep worked, but the newest drivers wouldnt install b/c it couldnt find something (i forget what it said, something about not being able to find a compatible something)

basically, we tried tons of different things, but windows wouldnt load...so he left after 5 hrs, ill be waiting to reschedule another appt for this week...hopefully we will have more than one person this time.

so a couple mins after he left, i gave it a shot, and chose to load the last known working config and guess what...WINDOWS FUCKING LOADED!!! i re-ran drivesweep and rebooted and it loaded windows correctly!!!11

thats the last touch i made to the computer, im afraid to do anything else...has anyone ever had or heard of a problem like this, or does anyone know of a possible source of this problem or a feasible solution? i would give whoever has anything that works +1's basically every time i see them...

What exactly did you do between the time that the last workin conf. was saved and you loaded it? Soudns to me like something had been installed that wasnt compatible with the GFX-card or similar, so it screwed up yer system. A co-worker of mine had the same prob, but with his netcard instead. Now, his netcard is fuxxored. Well, give me any info on stuff youve installed between thos two points, and Ill see what I can come up with.

Congrats on getting it to work.

Sometimes comps just do that.

sure thing, we were messing around with a few things, and we just wiped the hd and started over 2x, the hd image installed was from my university had a bunch of programs, all of which are pre-registered and work fine. the shit we were trying to install over these tries were basically the nvidia chipset drivers and nvidia game drivers...he also messed around a lot with my device mgr and BIOS settings, he tried to dl and install a BIOS setting from the ASUS website. we think its either a gfx card problem or possibly a sound card problem. we are really clueless tho...neither of us is fairly familiar with hardware

i should tell you what i have in there, as far as i know, there should be no reason for shit not to work.

Motherboard - Proactive ai ASUS A8N SLI
CPU - Dual Core Athlon 64 FX 3700+
Memory Sticks - 1GB (2x512 mb) DDR PC-3200 400MHz
Video Card - PCI-E BFG Tech nVidia GeForce 7800 FX

If you need any other info i can give it to you- hd, psu, etc

yeah they got the internet working on it on one of the installations, but it wasnt done on this one...i might be able to properly set it up

at least then, i could try to get some of these other pieces of hardware windows is recognizing installed, and then access, dl and install the newest drivers for my gfx

ill be talking to my dad who built the rig...he might have some insight

and there will be another session with the tech ppl, it just sucks the shit isnt working, ive been having some bad luck recently with things like this...my m4 too was fucked out of the box wallbash: spank: cuss:

though NVidia does seem to always come out with the top of the line shit, i see more incompatabilities with nvidia than i ever do with ATI. for now create a fresh image of your current working drive and what not. and then try to reinstall the new card. what could have happened is there was a conflict in drivers, which tripped the incompatibility. I recommend removing all other card drivers (not the onboard ones however) before you try to reinstall the new card. If you get the warning, stop, and try to find the newest drivers on the web, install them and try to reboot. this should work. Ive seen it happen many times when drivers conflict with eachother and create such an error

Wow head up, I was thinking of the same setup (A8n mobo, 3800 dual core, 7800 gfx card) for a pc I'm trying to find some cash for.

Hmm maybe I'll think twice. Must have just been a fluke?

so you think it might have to do with the order in which the shit was installed?

i know that naturally, the mobo was the first to be detected, and an vga enabled graphics controller was detected last in a series of like 5 found new hardware wizard popups...im gonna wait this out for tonite at least unless i can get in touch with the dad

sounds logical sh, thanks

sniper101, that would be what you would think solves it right? not the case, as i was saying before that the nvidia drivers we dled off the net seem not to have worked...this is a wierd problem, makes me wanna pull my hair out

the first thing i think i need to do is gain connectability to the net, which might be possible by re-installing our ISP, the shitty ole AEGIS client
