it works. You can go to Damascus, Syria and find street vendors with 24k gold just laying out in the open. No one even thinks about stealing. Bottom line, don't do it.
stealing is wrong, but they will try everything they can to trick you. my grandma was in Egypt, she wanted to buy this wooden crocodile replica (mini-sized of course), they took it to the back room, then came out with a package already wrapped. when she got to her hotel room and unwrapped, it wasnt the crocodile but some other thing, and it was broken.
they probably saw they were white people.

When my grandmother goes to the Middle East on occasion, people ask her where she's from. She says America and they get a weird look on their face, but then she'll start talking arabic to them and the natives' faces light up. My grandmother danced in the street while my grandfather played the dilbecca (arabic drum). Them and the townspeople had a blast together, and they offered my grandparents free stuff (including some gold jewelry).
