Madison also said:

“We’ve staked the whole future of American civilization not on the power of government, far from it. We have staked future …upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the ten commandments of God. The future success of America is not in the constitution, but in the laws of God upon which this constitution is founded.”

Not really relevant to this discussion I guess, but it is ironic to me that the scholars and journalists quoting Madison for one purpose are the same ones who claim the Founding Fathers wanted an America that is in no way influenced by God and that want these United States to deny that the constitution was in no way influenced by the ten commandments.
