Probably panicked after seeing his mate get totalled....I imagine those vehicles are moving so fast its near impossible to judge how quickly they can reach you...
He probably glanced in the direction briefly, saw no cars, or saw cars in the distance, assumed it was safe...and then a split second later cars are where he is.
