Every year more and more of our personal freedoms get taken away. This is just another step in that direction. The cameras will deter crime where they are - maybe - but the criminals will find a way around. I mean, did hackers stop because of security programs? And when they do find a way around, the cameras are still there, with that unblinking eye, watching you scrathing your ass.

I think it's a great idea.

I'll sacrifice a little privacy if it prevents a 14 year old girl from being raped, deters a 15 year old boy from buying crack for the first time, or slows down the asshole who always punches the gas at a yellow light.

It's a small sacrifice. The only people who would have a problem with the system are those who have something to hide.

How about we tap your phone, or record all your computer usage then, because many crimes happen there too, and if you have nothing to hide, then it should be OK, right?

That statement is a little too broad for my taste, actually, it is way too broad. I dont trust my government, especially the local ones that would control such measures, nearly that much.

I thought we were just talking about cameras in public places, not phone/data taps. I definitely don't agree with that.

Taken to those extremes, yeah that statement would be too broad.

I know that wasnt the original question, but I truely think that those are related (maybe only thinnly). It may seem extreme, but nothing happens that abruptly, it all happens gradually and cc cameras would be the first step. They may be a very good idea, but I think a sceptical mistrust of authority is healthy. There need to be people out there argueing the big brother thing, just to keep the police honest. The situations I mentioned could be justified by the same exact reasons the cc cameras are justified.

Typically, I am pretty complacent about this kind of thing, mostly becaue I dont hae anything to hide, but I dont label the anti-authority people as bad. Their input should be heard as well.

Damn right. Without it, you'd have Nazi Germany.

I think an even better measure would be what the freakin Constitution states as a right to bear arms. Why the heck are we having a constitutional right taken away from us? It would stop a lot of crime, because, after all, who would rob a bank if they knew there is a potential of 30 people having guns inside. Or who would try to rape a women if they have no idea if that women has a gun or not?

I believe EVERYONE should have the right to have a gun, and the only reason someone should go to jail for having one is when they point it at someone without a valid reason. For instance, say I walk down the street and some ho bumps into me, then gets pissed because she thinks im at fault for the incident, and pulls out a gun and tells me to apologize, then that bitch needs to go to jail! If she shoots, she should be fucking killed, and if she misses, I'd kill her myself (only in self defense).

This Hypothesis would not invade anyones privacy, and it would put a little bit of control back with the people. Remember, this government is "For the people, by the people"

Im in the UK so there are cameras everwhere i go. It doesn't bother me so much though, yeah someone could be watching you, but is that really such a bad thing? There is always someone looking over you, there installed in public places anyway so whats the problem?

I dont have a problem with cctv, in fact i occasionally give a little wave to them. Have some fun with them, act suspicous, keep looking at someone walking behind you, then frantically pick up your pace and start running.

the only time i wouldnt want one was if it was like on my street, i already have problems with skateboarding in the street(just cruising around)... but it would be fun to like walk out in the middle of the street and fall over or pretend you ahd a heart attack., or sit on the curb and stare at it evil: ... i would seriously hate it if they put them here, what next a camera in my room?
